What Bupa Global cover includes

The international arm of the Bupa group — the most recognised UK-origin IPMI brand for globally-mobile executives, HNW individuals and expatriate families.

Bupa Global is the international arm of the Bupa group — one of the world's largest health insurers and the strongest single UK-origin brand in the IPMI market. Its flagship individual proposition is the Bupa Global range (Ultimate, Elite, Premier, Classic, Select), a five-tier ladder with annual maximums ranging from around £1 million (Select) to fully comprehensive cover with no annual overall maximum on the top Ultimate tier. Bupa Global is the default choice PremierPMI recommends for globally-mobile UK executives who want direct-settlement access to the world's leading private hospitals, 24/7 multilingual concierge care, and the confidence of a household-name insurer regulated in London. Its cover typically includes inpatient, day-patient and outpatient acute treatment, cancer care to the same limits as any other condition, mental-health cover, evacuation and repatriation, maternity (after a qualifying period), routine dental (on higher tiers) and vision.

Worldwide (choose Worldwide including or excluding USA). No area rating — one premium regardless of where you seek treatment within your area of cover.

Bupa Global hospital access and network

Bupa Global gives direct-settlement access to the world's leading private hospitals across 190+ countries — including Cromwell Hospital in London, the King Edward VII Hospital, the London Clinic, HCA facilities, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Bumrungrad in Bangkok, Raffles Hospital in Singapore, American Hospital Dubai and Mount Elizabeth in Singapore. Members can generally treat anywhere in-network without pre-authorisation for outpatient consultations, and with pre-authorisation for planned inpatient work.

Emergency medical evacuation to the nearest medically-appropriate facility is included on every tier — Bupa Global co-ordinates the evacuation, uses air ambulance where required, and covers reasonable escort costs for one family member. Repatriation to home country for continued treatment or return to home following discharge is also included. All evacuations are managed through Bupa Global's 24/7 assistance team.

Underwriting basis

  • Full medical underwriting (FMU) is the standard route for individual and family Bupa Global plans — declare full health history at application.
  • Continuous personal medical exclusions (CPME) is available on group schemes moving from another IPMI provider — pre-existing conditions previously covered continue to be covered.
  • Medical history disregarded (MHD) is available on larger corporate schemes typically from 20+ members subject to Bupa Global underwriting agreement.
  • Once accepted, cover is guaranteed renewable for life — Bupa Global will not selectively cancel or non-renew an individual member for making claims.

Making a claim

  • 1. Contact Bupa Global first — For planned treatment, call or message Bupa Global's 24/7 team before booking. For emergencies, seek treatment immediately and notify Bupa Global as soon as safe to do so.
  • 2. Pre-authorisation for inpatient — Bupa Global reviews the treatment plan against your cover, confirms eligibility, and issues a Guarantee of Payment (GoP) direct to the hospital — you don't pay upfront.
  • 3. Attend treatment — Present your Bupa Global member card at the hospital. For in-network facilities, Bupa Global settles directly. For out-of-network, you may need to pay and reclaim.
  • 4. Reimbursement (where needed) — For any out-of-network or outpatient costs you paid, submit an itemised invoice via the Bupa Global member app. Approved claims are typically reimbursed in the currency of your choice within 5–10 working days.

Where Bupa Global stands out

  • The strongest single hospital network in IPMI — direct settlement at almost every named-brand private hospital worldwide, including tier-1 London (Cromwell, HCA, London Clinic).
  • No annual overall maximum on the Ultimate tier — genuine HNW-grade cover without hidden ceilings.
  • Guaranteed lifetime renewal once accepted — Bupa Global cannot selectively non-renew individual members.
  • Cancer cover to the full annual overall maximum on every tier — one of the strongest cancer positions in the market.
  • Multilingual case-managed assistance in London and Copenhagen — 24/7 UK-regulated concierge care.

Watch-outs before you buy

  • USA cover is a separately-priced option — the default plan is Worldwide excluding USA. Add USA cover if you travel there regularly for more than short trips.
  • Premiums step up with age each renewal — model 5- and 10-year renewal trajectories before committing, especially for members entering their 60s.
  • Full medical underwriting means pre-existing conditions may be excluded or specifically loaded. CPME transfer from a like-for-like IPMI plan is often the cleanest route.
  • Outpatient cover is capped on Select and Classic — heavy outpatient users usually need Premier or above.

PremierPMI broker desk notes

  • For most globally-mobile UK executive clients, Bupa Global Premier is the value sweet-spot — it hits full cancer cover, meaningful outpatient limits and evacuation without the Ultimate premium load.
  • For HNW / UHNW clients with young families who genuinely want no ceiling on any single treatment, Bupa Global Ultimate is the cleanest UK-regulated IPMI product on the market.
  • For clients moving from a UK domestic Bupa policy to overseas assignment, a CPME transfer to Bupa Global preserves pre-existing condition cover cleanly — always a specific PremierPMI conversation before departure.
  • Bupa Global's premium is at the higher end of the market. For price-sensitive expats who want a strong UK-regulated alternative, William Russell or Allianz Care usually price 15–25% lower on like-for-like cover.

Bupa Global compared with other insurers

VersusBroker verdict
AXA — Global HealthcareAXA is the closest structural peer — comparable hospital network, similar tiers, occasionally sharper on outpatient limits. Bupa Global tends to win on named-brand hospital direct-settlement in London and the Middle East.
Cigna GlobalCigna's modular build (choose your own outpatient / dental / evacuation modules) can be leaner. Bupa Global's bundled tiers are simpler and its case-managed concierge is stronger for HNW clients.
Allianz CareAllianz Care is often 10–20% cheaper on like-for-like cover and has strong European direct-settlement. Bupa Global has the edge on top-tier UK hospital access and brand recognition.
William RussellWilliam Russell places most of its cover through AWP Health & Life (an Allianz group underwriter) — a strong-value UK-broker-friendly alternative for expats. Bupa Global sits above it on network breadth and top-end limits.

Broker verdict

Bupa Global is the household-name IPMI pick — the right recommendation when a globally-mobile UK executive or HNW individual wants the broadest direct-settlement hospital network, uncapped Ultimate-tier limits, guaranteed lifetime renewal and the confidence of a London-regulated brand. It's not the cheapest — but it's the cleanest premium option in the UK IPMI market.

Best for: Best for globally-mobile UK executives and HNW individuals wanting premium hospital access.

Common questions

What is Bupa Global?

Bupa Global is the international arm of the Bupa group, providing international private medical insurance (IPMI) to globally-mobile individuals, families and corporate members. It's a separate product range from Bupa UK's domestic PMI — designed for people who live, work or travel internationally and need cover across multiple countries with direct settlement at named-brand private hospitals worldwide.

How much does Bupa Global cost?

Bupa Global premiums vary significantly by age, region of cover, tier and any USA cover election. As a broad illustration, single-adult premiums start from around £180/month for Bupa Global Select and can exceed £560/month for Ultimate at older ages. PremierPMI quotes live premiums against your specific age band, country of residence and required tier.

Does Bupa Global cover the USA?

Yes — Bupa Global offers Worldwide including USA cover as a separately-priced option. The default plan is Worldwide excluding USA (which still covers emergency treatment during short USA trips on most tiers). If you live in the USA, are a frequent US traveller, or travel there for planned treatment, elect the Worldwide including USA option — it materially increases premium but is essential for genuine US healthcare access.

Is Bupa Global regulated in the UK?

Yes — Bupa Insurance Ltd, the underwriter of the Bupa Global range, is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority (FRN 203332). This gives Bupa Global members the protection of UK regulatory oversight regardless of where they live or claim.

Can I move from a UK Bupa policy to Bupa Global?

Yes — Bupa can facilitate a transfer from a UK domestic Bupa policy to Bupa Global on a CPME (continuous personal medical exclusions) basis, meaning pre-existing conditions covered on your UK plan continue to be covered on the international plan. This is one of the cleanest routes for UK residents relocating internationally and one PremierPMI regularly executes.

Does Bupa Global cover pre-existing conditions?

Bupa Global's standard underwriting is full medical underwriting (FMU) — you declare your health history and Bupa Global either accepts the condition, excludes it, or applies a specific loading. On group schemes and inbound transfers from like-for-like IPMI, CPME or MHD terms may be available. Always disclose fully — non-disclosure risks a declined claim later.

Price basis: Illustrative single-adult monthly premium on the provider's entry international tier, excluding USA cover and optional modules. Premiums vary by age, region of cover, tier and module election.
