How UK PMI treats type 1 and type 2 diabetes — moratorium vs FMU, insulin, CGM cover and complications explained by PremierPMI. Call 020 4525 0884.

Health Insurance for Diabetes

Existing diabetes is a pre-existing condition on UK PMI — the diabetes itself and its direct maintenance (insulin, HbA1c monitoring) is excluded. However, unrelated conditions, and often diabetes complications (diabetic retinopathy, cardiac, neuropathy) are covered subject to underwriting. Moratorium underwriting can accept diabetes back into cover after two symptom-free years. WPA and The Exeter are typically most flexible for diabetic applicants.

  • Around 4.4 million people in the UK live with diabetes (Diabetes UK 2024). Type 2 accounts for ~90%, type 1 ~8%, other rarer forms ~2%. PMI is designed for acute treatment, not chronic disease management, so ongoing diabetes care itself is not what UK health insurance is built to fund. However, there are important nuances that make PMI valuable for diabetic applicants.
  • The two underwriting approaches produce very different outcomes. Full Medical Underwriting (FMU) asks about diabetes at quote and typically permanently excludes it and directly related complications. Moratorium underwriting excludes any condition you have had symptoms of or treatment for in the last 5 years — but can accept that condition back into cover after you have been symptom-free and treatment-free for 2 continuous years. For well-controlled type 2 diabetes, moratorium is often the better choice.
  • What PMI does cover, even for diabetics: unrelated illnesses (cancer, orthopaedic surgery, mental health, ENT), and often complications where the causal link is medically debatable (cardiac events, retinopathy on some policies). Consultant-led diabetes care through private endocrinologists is available on a self-pay basis and some insurers (WPA, The Exeter) will consider it under moratorium once the two-year rule is met.
