Private GP cover gives you same-day access to a GMC-registered UK GP via video, phone or (on some plans) face-to-face. The GP can consult, prescribe privately, refer to specialists and order private diagnostics — all included in your PMI premium.

Which insurers include private GP as standard?

How fast can I see a private GP?

Same day — usually within 2 hours of booking. AXA Doctor@Hand is 24/7. Most others are 7am–11pm 7 days a week.

Can a private GP prescribe medication?

Yes — private prescriptions issued electronically. Some services (Aviva Digital GP, Bupa Blua Health) deliver medication to your door. Note that private prescriptions are usually paid at cost — the GP service is free, the medication is not.

Can I get a private specialist referral from a PMI GP?

Yes — this is one of the main uses. A private GP referral triggers your PMI specialist claim (consultant appointment, diagnostics, treatment). You do not need an NHS GP referral.

Is face-to-face private GP available?

Bupa Blua Health, AXA Doctor@Hand and Aviva Digital GP all offer face-to-face options in London and selected cities. Coverage varies — always check your postcode.

Does private GP cover work outside the UK?

Some do. Aviva Digital GP and AXA Doctor@Hand work internationally for policyholders (subject to plan). Bupa's international product Bupa Global includes full worldwide GP access.

Does private GP cover my family?

Yes on family PMI. All members can book virtual GP appointments independently. Children can be seen by paediatric-trained GPs where available.
