Where AXA Health wins
- Fast Track Appointments — AXA books your specialist for you, no GP referral needed for many musculoskeletal, gynaecological and mental-health complaints.
- Working Body physiotherapy — self-referral, 6 sessions per condition per year on Comprehensive.
- Mind Health service — day-one triage with a clinician, up to 6 CBT sessions or onward referral.
Where Bupa wins
- Cancer Promise — genuinely differentiated ongoing cancer cover.
- Bupa Health Clinics for GP-level assessments without a full consultant referral.
- Bupa Anytime HealthLine — 24/7 nurse-led triage, no policy limit on calls.
AXA Health watch-outs
- AXA is rarely the cheapest headline premium — you're paying for the Fast Track service.
- Diagnostic scans done outside AXA's network may only be reimbursed at 'reasonable and customary' rates — always call the pre-auth line first.
- Extended hospital list uplift in London postcodes can be material — get both quotes and compare.
Bupa watch-outs
- Guided Consultant Network is materially cheaper — but you don't get open choice of consultant. Read the wording carefully.
- Bupa is typically 15–25% more expensive than Aviva at like-for-like ages and postcodes.
- Renewal increases can be sharper than mid-market insurers in years where a claim has occurred; broker retention negotiation genuinely matters here.
Hospital access compared
AXA Health: AXA uses Guided (network only, most affordable), Standard (broad national coverage) and Extended (adds top-tier central-London HCA hospitals). We usually recommend Standard for clients outside the M25 and Extended for those in central-London postcodes who specifically want HCA access.
Bupa: Bupa's Guided Consultant Network (choose from a shortlist Bupa selects for your condition) delivers the sharpest pricing. Standard and Extended hospital lists progressively add more sites including HCA hospitals. Cromwell Hospital in Kensington is Bupa-owned and open-access to Bupa members.
Underwriting compared
| Insurer | Underwriting options |
|---|---|
| AXA Health | Moratorium — most common, no forms, 5-year lookback with a 2-year symptom-free clearing period.; Full Medical Underwriting — clear exclusions written up front.; Switch Cover Moratorium & CPME — used when moving from another UK PMI insurer. |
| Bupa | Moratorium; Full Medical Underwriting; Continued Personal Medical Exclusions |
PremierPMI verdict
If speed of access matters — and for most working-age professionals it does — AXA Health is the strongest whole-of-market recommendation we make. You pay a modest premium over Aviva to get the fastest specialist booking journey in UK PMI.
Bupa is the premium buy for clients whose priority is depth of cover on the claims that scare them most — cancer, complex cardiac, complex musculoskeletal — and who value direct-access clinics. You pay for it, and it's usually worth it when it matters.
- Choose AXA Health if: Fastest specialist access + strongest muscle-joint pathway.
- Choose Bupa if: Best-in-class cancer cover + owned clinics.
- Both are placed whole-of-market by PremierPMI — we quote each side by side so you compare like for like before you commit.
