Where Bupa wins

  • Cancer Cover with no published time or cost limit while you remain a member with that option, access to a dedicated cancer Direct Access line, and Specialist Centres offering breast cancer appointments within two working days and bowel cancer appointments within four working days (Bupa, Our cancer promise, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • A yearly dental appointment at a Bupa Dental Care practice for everyone on the policy, with a £300 allowance towards restorative treatment if it's needed (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • Members First, from 30 March 2026: Bupa's own Talking Therapies team, by phone, video or in person at a Mindplace centre, with no excess charged and no effect on your outpatient allowance or no-claims discount (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026).

Where The Exeter wins

  • Unlimited in-patient and day-patient treatment, and comprehensive cancer cover with no time or financial limit, as core cover on every Health+ policy (Health+ IPID, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • A graduated No Claims Discount: the Health+ Product Guide states a member's discount will never move down by more than three levels in any one policy year, and it starts moving back up after a claim-free year (Health+ Product Guide, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • HealthWise app benefits — including unlimited remote GP appointments, two second medical opinion consultations a year and six physiotherapy, mental health, lifestyle, nutrition and dietitian consultations a year — included for Health+ members and immediate family at no extra cost (Health+ Product Guide, checked 15 Oct 2026).

Bupa watch-outs

  • Treatment and Care doesn't cover private diagnosis; outpatient consultations, tests and scans are only covered for six months after a related hospital stay (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • Cancer Cover is a separate choice from the core policy; without it, cancer-related benefits aren't covered (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • Guided Care reduces premium but means choosing from three named consultants Bupa offers, rather than open choice (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • Treatment outside the UK isn't covered under Bupa By You (Bupa By You policy guide, checked 15 Oct 2026).

The Exeter watch-outs

  • Health+ is a single PMI product, not a combined PMI-and-cash-plan policy; The Exeter sells a separate Cash Plan product, so dental and optical cash benefits are not built into Health+ (The Exeter product range pages, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • Outpatient consultations and diagnostics, mental health cover and therapies cover are optional add-ons, not automatic; leaving them out removes that cover (Health+ IPID, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • New applicants must be aged 18–79 inclusive at the policy start date — this is a published limit, not an open-ended acceptance age (Health+ data capture form, checked 15 Oct 2026).
  • There is no direct-access route: claims are made through a GP referral and must be authorised by The Exeter before treatment (Health+ IPID, checked 15 Oct 2026).

Hospital access compared

Bupa: Bupa By You offers a choice of three hospital networks: Essential Access (private hospitals and clinics across the UK, excluding central London), Extended Choice (a wider UK list plus a selection of central London hospitals) and Extended Choice with Central London (the widest list, including many major London hospitals) (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026). On any network you can add Guided Care at no extra cost; Bupa gives you three named consultants from its Open Referral Network, which the brochure says includes over 19,500 consultants, so you shouldn't need to travel more than 15 miles (5 miles in London); Guided Care isn't available under 18 (Bupa By You brochure, April 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026). Bupa also owns Cromwell Hospital in South Kensington, but Cromwell accepts patients insured with other insurers too, so Bupa membership is not required to be treated there (Bupa, Cromwell private hospital care, checked 15 Oct 2026; Cromwell Hospital, paying with insurance, checked 15 Oct 2026). You can check whether a hospital or consultant is covered using Bupa's Finder tool at finder.bupa.co.uk (Bupa, Finder, checked 15 Oct 2026).

The Exeter: On Health+ Traditional you choose from three named hospital lists (Essential, Standard or Extended); the list with the most hospitals costs more. On Health+ Guided there is no hospital list at the point of sale — The Exeter recommends a shortlist of specialists, pre-negotiated on fees, when you claim (The Exeter cover-options and adviser Health+ pages, checked 15 Oct 2026). The Exeter does not publish a count of hospitals on its own site, so we confirm which named hospitals are on your chosen list before you buy.

Underwriting compared

InsurerUnderwriting options
BupaFull medical underwriting: you disclose medical history when you apply and Bupa confirms any pre-existing condition exclusions before cover starts (Bupa By You policy guide, checked 15 Oct 2026).; Moratorium: Bupa doesn't ask about medical history when you apply; instead, a moratorium condition (one with symptoms, advice, treatment or medication in the five years before your moratorium start date) isn't covered unless you go two consecutive years without symptoms, advice, treatment or medication for it (Bupa By You policy guide, checked 15 Oct 2026).; Moratorium switch: if you switch a moratorium policy to Bupa from another insurer with no break in cover, your original moratorium start date carries over, subject to Bupa's review of your medical history (Bupa By You policy guide, checked 15 Oct 2026).; We confirm with Bupa whether your existing exclusions can carry across before you cancel a current policy.
The ExeterFull medical underwriting — a full medical declaration is required; pre-existing conditions are excluded unless specifically accepted (The Exeter cover-options page, checked 15 Oct 2026).; Standard Moratorium — no medical history required at outset; conditions from the five years before joining are excluded for two years, then reviewed against a two-year clear rule (The Exeter cover-options page, checked 15 Oct 2026).; Continued Moratorium or Continued personal medical exclusions — for clients switching insurer, carrying across an existing moratorium clock or existing personal exclusions, subject to a certificate from the previous insurer (The Exeter cover-options page, checked 15 Oct 2026).

PremierPMI verdict

Bupa By You suits clients who want a clearly optional, strongly worded Cancer Cover benefit and a choice between three hospital networks. Check whether Comprehensive or the cheaper Treatment and Care option fits, since only Comprehensive covers private diagnosis.

The Exeter is a mutual friendly society whose single PMI product, Health+, gives unlimited in-patient, day-patient and cancer cover as standard, with a choice between a named hospital list (Traditional) and a lower-cost guided-specialist route (Guided). It's worth comparing for clients who want that structure and a graduated no-claims discount, provided you check your own quote against the 18–79 joining-age window and confirm which hospitals or specialists sit on your chosen route.

  • Choose Bupa if: Optional Cancer Cover with no published time or cost limit.
  • Choose The Exeter if: Mutual structure, named hospital list or guided route, unlimited cancer cover.
  • Both are placed whole-of-market by PremierPMI — we quote each side by side so you compare like for like before you commit.
