Where Vitality wins

  • Cancer cover is in the core plan, with 12 months of Cancer Nurse Specialist support.
  • Up to eight Talking Therapies sessions without a GP referral, in core cover.
  • Out-patient limits still cover MRI, CT and PET scans in full.
  • Mental health limits are restored after 56 days without in-patient or day-patient treatment.
  • A rewards programme with partner discounts, including up to 40% off Garmin devices and up to 50% off Virgin Active membership, plus an Apple Watch offer on a 0% APR credit agreement, subject to eligibility and a credit check (Vitality rewards pages, checked 15 Oct 2026).

Where WPA wins

  • Fast Track Pathways (Physiotherapy, Skin Support and Cancer Diagnosis) give access to care without a GP referral; Fast Track Physiotherapy and Fast Track Skin Support don't use an excess or affect the No Claims Discount (WPA Complete Health brochure, effective 1 March 2026).
  • Cancer Care optional extra has no financial cap on tests and treatment from diagnosis to palliative treatment, and unlimited follow-up scans and consultations (WPA Complete Health brochure, effective 1 March 2026).
  • Shared Responsibility (co-payment): where selected, the member pays 25% of claims for eligible treatment up to their chosen level of Shared Responsibility, as an alternative or addition to a standard excess (WPA Complete Health IPID, effective 1 November 2025).

Vitality watch-outs

  • Consultant fees are paid in full only with a consultant Vitality recognises.
  • Physio outside the Priority Physio network is paid up to £35 a session, taken from your out-patient limit.
  • Vitality does not publish the size of its renewal adjustments.
  • Rewards are not guaranteed for the life of the policy, depend on staying active and linking a device, and can change; we don't put a cash value on them when comparing providers.

WPA watch-outs

  • Fast Track Cancer Diagnosis does affect the No Claims Discount and any excess will apply, unlike the physiotherapy and skin pathways (WPA Complete Health brochure, effective 1 March 2026).
  • Joining aged 66 or over requires Full Medical Underwriting and a minimum £500 excess, and Targeted Cancer Therapies/Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products under Cancer Care are only funded when not available on the NHS (WPA Complete Health IPID, effective 1 November 2025).
  • Standard exclusions apply: pre-existing conditions, chronic/long-term conditions, dental problems (beyond limited cash benefits), fertility/pregnancy/childbirth, cosmetic treatment and allergic conditions (WPA Complete Health IPID, effective 1 November 2025).

Hospital access compared

Vitality: Without a hospital list (Consultant Select), Vitality finds care for you and offers up to 10 consultants. Countrywide covers most private hospitals and NHS private patient units outside central London and a limited central London choice, including The Cleveland Clinic London, The London Clinic, St John & Elizabeth Hospital and King Edward VII's Hospital. London Care covers all private hospitals and NHS private patient units in the UK. Vitality does not publish hospital counts, so we check your hospital in its finder at quote.

WPA: WPA provides an extensive choice of hospitals as standard, including large private hospital groups, independent private hospitals and clinics, and private wings of NHS hospitals. Adding the Premium Hospitals Optional Extra extends the choice to over 1,000 hospitals, clinics and scanning centres across the UK, including hospitals primarily in and around London such as the Wellington Hospital, the London Clinic, the Portland Hospital, the Princess Grace Hospital, the Harley Street Clinic, the Royal Marsden (London and Surrey) and University College Hospital; treatment at a Premium Hospital is not covered unless this Optional Extra is selected (WPA Complete Health brochure, effective 1 March 2026, checked 15 Oct 2026).

Underwriting compared

InsurerUnderwriting options
VitalityFull medical underwriting — used in Vitality's published price example; you disclose your history up front and exclusions are confirmed before cover starts (Vitality, underwriting pages, checked 15 Oct 2026).; Other underwriting options such as moratorium are not set out on the Vitality pages we checked; confirm what's available at quote.; Switching to Vitality: a switching discount is available depending on lifestyle and medical history, with terms and conditions applying (Vitality, switch to Vitality, vitality.co.uk/health-insurance/switching, checked 15 Oct 2026).; Who can apply: adults aged 18 to 79 at the plan start date (Vitality, switch to Vitality, checked 15 Oct 2026).
WPAFull Medical Underwriting (FMU); Moratorium Underwriting; Switch/Continued Moratorium; Switch/Continued Personal Medical Exclusions (CPME)

PremierPMI verdict

Vitality is a strong choice if you want cancer cover and Talking Therapies in the core plan and will use the rewards programme. Check the hospital option carefully: the cheapest price uses Consultant Select, where Vitality chooses the hospital.

WPA is a strong fit for clients who want to build cover from a core policy plus optional extras, value a not-for-profit, member-owned structure, and are comfortable confirming Optional Extras and excess/Shared Responsibility levels at quote rather than relying on one fixed package.

  • Choose Vitality if: Core cancer cover and Talking Therapies, plus rewards.
