Yes — diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and reconstruction are funded where the cancer was not pre-existing or already under investigation.
Private Breast Cancer Cover UK
Breast cancer is the UK's most common cancer (~56,000 new cases/year, Cancer Research UK). Full-cover PMI (Bupa By You, AXA Personal Health, Aviva with cancer add-on, Freedom Elite) funds the entire pathway: symptomatic clinic, triple assessment, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, tamoxifen/aromatase inhibitors, trastuzumab (Herceptin), and reconstructive surgery. Premiums start from £68.42/month for a 40-year-old non-smoker on comprehensive cover.
Breast Cancer Cover: what the cover actually does
One in seven UK women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. NHS breast pathways are strong but access is bottlenecked — only 78.8% of trusts met the 2-week symptomatic referral standard in Q1 2025, and the 62-day diagnosis-to-treatment standard fell to 65.9%. Private cover collapses those timelines.
A full-cover PMI policy funds the whole pathway from symptom to survivorship: same-week symptomatic breast clinic, mammogram, ultrasound and core biopsy on the same visit ('one-stop clinic'), MRI staging within 10 days, breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy at HCA/Nuffield/Spire, sentinel node biopsy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endocrine therapy (5–10 years), and HER2-targeted therapies (Herceptin, pertuzumab, T-DM1).
Reconstruction is where policies vary widely. Bupa, AXA and Aviva Healthier Solutions fund immediate and delayed reconstruction (implants, DIEP flap, LD flap) as an integral part of cancer treatment. Vitality's Advanced Cancer Cover funds reconstruction but caps some prosthesis costs. Always confirm reconstruction in writing before switching.

Before you buy — broker checklist
- Confirm 'full' not 'core' cancer cover — core caps HER2-targeted therapy.
- Verify reconstruction (immediate + delayed) is fully funded.
- Check endocrine therapy is covered for 5–10 years post-surgery.
- Confirm access to specialist breast units (Royal Marsden, Nuffield, HCA).
- Ask about dedicated breast cancer nurse/case manager.
- Verify genetic testing (BRCA1/2) is covered if family history.
- Check psychological support and lymphoedema care are included.
PremierPMI broker desk notes
- Bupa and AXA remain the two strongest placements for breast cancer cover — both fund the entire pathway with no annual cap.
- For clients with a family history but no diagnosis, moratorium underwriting almost always accepts standard terms — history alone is not exclusionary.
- Never assume reconstruction is included — five insurers have subtly different wording. We check every schedule in writing.
- If a client has already been diagnosed, PMI cannot cover the current episode, but we place cover for future unrelated conditions and post-remission recurrence risk.
Common questions
Does private health insurance cover breast cancer?
Yes — every UK PMI policy with cancer cover funds breast cancer treatment. Full-cover policies (Bupa By You, AXA Personal Health, Aviva + cancer add-on) fund the entire pathway including HER2-targeted therapies and reconstruction with no annual cap.
Is breast reconstruction covered by PMI?
Yes on full-cover policies. Bupa, AXA and Aviva fund immediate and delayed reconstruction (implants, DIEP flap, LD flap) as an integral part of breast cancer treatment. Always confirm in writing.
How fast can I see a private breast clinic?
Typically 3–7 working days from GP or self-referral. Most private breast clinics operate one-stop assessment: consultation, mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy at a single appointment.
Is Herceptin (trastuzumab) covered on UK PMI?
Yes on full-cover policies. Bupa, AXA, Aviva and Freedom Elite all fund NICE-approved HER2-targeted therapies. Core policies may cap biological drug spend — always check the schedule.
Can I have private treatment if my breast cancer was diagnosed on the NHS?
Once diagnosed the current episode is pre-existing and cannot be covered by new PMI. However, existing PMI in force at diagnosis funds the whole treatment pathway. Future PMI can still cover unrelated conditions.
Are genetic tests for BRCA1/2 covered?
Increasingly yes — Bupa, AXA and Aviva fund genetic testing where there is qualifying family history and a consultant recommendation. Some policies require pre-authorisation.
What is the cost of private breast cancer treatment?
Full pathway costs £45,000–£120,000+ depending on treatment complexity. Full-cover PMI has no annual cap. A one-stop breast clinic alone costs £850–£1,400 self-pay.
Does PMI cover lymphoedema treatment after breast surgery?
Yes on full-cover policies — manual lymphatic drainage, compression garments and specialist physiotherapy are covered as part of cancer aftercare.
