How UK private medical insurance covers specific conditions — cancer, mental health, orthopaedics, cardiac, women's and men's health
Health insurance by condition
Cover for a named condition depends far more on underwriting and policy wording than on headline price. These guides set out, condition by condition, what a UK private medical insurance policy will and will not pay for, how moratorium and full medical underwriting treat a history of that condition, and which insurers on our panel place it best.

Pre-existing conditions and underwriting
No UK individual PMI policy covers a pre-existing condition on standard terms. Under a moratorium the condition is excluded while it remains recently treated or symptomatic — typically until you have gone a continuous period (usually two years) without treatment, medication, advice or symptoms. Under full medical underwriting the insurer prices and documents the exclusion up front, so you know the position before you buy rather than at claim.
Employer group schemes are the exception. On medical history disregarded terms, common on larger schemes, pre-existing conditions are covered from the start — which is why an employee with a medical history is often far better off inside a group scheme than buying individually.
- Acute conditions are covered; chronic-condition management is not, though acute flare-ups often are.
- Cancer cover varies most between insurers — check drug access, reconstruction and end-of-life benefit.
- Mental health is usually a module with day-patient and inpatient limits rather than unlimited cover.
- Switching insurer can preserve continued personal medical exclusions (CPME) instead of restarting a moratorium.
