PMI cover for polycystic ovary syndrome — endocrinology, gynaecology, metabolic screening and fertility diagnostics across UK insurers.

Private PCOS Cover UK

PMI covers PCOS diagnostic work-up: consultant endocrinology, gynaecology, pelvic ultrasound, hormone panels (LH, FSH, AMH, testosterone), fasting insulin/glucose and lipid profile. Fertility investigation is covered on most policies but IVF itself is excluded. Bupa, AXA and Aviva fund the fullest pathway.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) Cover: what the cover actually does

PCOS affects around 1 in 10 UK women of reproductive age (NHS England) and is the most common cause of anovulatory infertility. Diagnosis requires the Rotterdam criteria — two of: oligo/anovulation, clinical or biochemical androgen excess, polycystic ovarian morphology on ultrasound.

NHS pathways are fragmented — primary care hormone screening, GP-led endocrinology referral (~12 weeks), separate gynaecology referral (~15 weeks) and then possibly fertility clinic. Private care compresses this into a single 2–3 week multidisciplinary work-up.

PMI is particularly valuable for the metabolic screening element — around 40% of PCOS patients develop type 2 diabetes by age 40 (NICE NG223). Regular HbA1c, lipid profile and blood pressure monitoring is covered under private GP or endocrinology follow-up.

Key numbers our brokers work from

Before you buy — broker checklist

  • Confirm consultant endocrinology AND gynaecology are both funded.
  • Check AMH, LH/FSH, androgen and metabolic screening are included.
  • Verify pelvic ultrasound is covered as diagnostic imaging.
  • Accept that IVF treatment is excluded — investigation only is covered.
  • Ask about ongoing metabolic monitoring (HbA1c, lipids) via private GP.

PremierPMI broker desk notes

  • PCOS is not a single-appointment condition. Buy PMI with a strong outpatient benefit — the value is 3–4 consultations a year across two specialties, not one big surgery.
  • If PCOS is already diagnosed it is pre-existing. Moratorium may reinstate cover for asymptomatic periods after two clear years.
