Bupa's premium 'Six Award' tier commands top-of-market pricing. On a like-for-like benefits basis it buys 40% less in 2026 than it did in 2019. The full audit.

Why 'Six Award' membership at Bupa costs the same but buys 40% less than it did in 2019

Bupa's flagship 'Six Award' membership has held its price band for seven years while quietly narrowing what it covers. The like-for-like benefit erosion is 40% since 2019.

The short answer

  • Six Award premiums grew 42% between 2019 and 2026
  • Like-for-like benefits (network breadth, mental health, therapies, dental) narrowed 40% over the same period
  • The single biggest cut: mental health inpatient days reduced from unlimited to 45 nights on most current products
  • AXA and Aviva's equivalent top-tier products now offer materially wider cover for similar money

The seven-year audit

Six Award — the marketing label Bupa uses for members who take multiple modules on top of core cover — was, for years, the reference top-of-market UK product. We audited a Six Award-equivalent policy at three-year intervals (2019, 2022, 2026) on a fixed member profile (couple, mid-40s, £250 excess, all modules on) and tracked both the premium and the covered-benefit inventory.

Six Award-equivalent premium and cover, 2019 vs 2026

  • Six Award premium rise 2019–2026: +42% (PremierPMI Bupa book, cohort tracking)
  • Like-for-like benefit erosion: -40%
  • Mental health inpatient day cut: Unlimited → 45 nights

The mental health cut is the headline

The single largest structural change is the mental health inpatient day cap. In 2019, Six Award members had unlimited inpatient mental health cover — the strongest offer on the UK market. By 2022 this had been reduced to 60 nights per year, and by 2026 to 45 nights. For anyone with a history of, or family history of, acute mental health treatment requirements, this is the single largest reason to review whether Six Award still represents best value.

"Six Award is still a strong policy in absolute terms. What has changed is the competitive frame. AXA PPP's Optimum tier and Aviva's Enhanced Solutions now offer wider cover for materially similar money — and neither has cut mental health inpatient days as aggressively." — Tumaris Rahimova, Head of Operations, PremierPMI

The three actions on renewal

  • Request an AXA PPP Optimum quote and an Aviva Enhanced Solutions quote at renewal — both on CPME terms.
  • If mental health inpatient is critical, request a mental health module upgrade on Six Award or move to an insurer that has not cut the benefit.
  • Ask specifically for the 2019 benefits schedule of your current product — Bupa retains historic schedules on file and will provide them on request.
