Why the gap exists

NHS referral-to-treatment waits are driven by capacity and prioritisation: urgent and cancer pathways are protected, so elective orthopaedic, gynaecological and ENT procedures absorb most of the delay. Private capacity is not subject to the same queue, so the difference is widest exactly where NHS waits are longest.

• Check the specialty you would actually be referred into, not the headline average.
• Regional variation is large — a wait in one ICB can be double another's.
• Diagnostics often move faster privately than treatment does, which is where PMI adds most value.
