Does UK PMI cover mental health?

Yes — most UK PMI policies now include mental health cover, either as standard (Vitality, Bupa Mental Health Option) or as a low-cost add-on (Aviva, AXA). Cover typically includes CBT, counselling, psychiatry and inpatient psychiatric care.

How many therapy sessions does PMI cover per year?

Standard tier policies cover 20 outpatient therapy sessions per year. Premium tiers (Bupa Mental Health, AXA 45 Session, Vitality Advanced) cover 30–45 sessions. Most policies do not limit the type of therapy (CBT, EMDR, counselling, psychology) but require it to be delivered by an accredited therapist.

Can I claim on PMI for anxiety or depression?

Yes — anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD and eating disorders are all covered under the mental health benefit, provided you were not experiencing symptoms or receiving treatment when you took the policy out (or, for moratorium underwriting, until the exclusion period has passed).

Does PMI cover ADHD or autism assessment?

Will PMI cover a stay at The Priory?

Is CAMHS covered for children under PMI?

PMI does not cover NHS CAMHS but does provide a private CAMHS-alternative pathway. Bupa By You and Aviva Healthier Solutions with Mental Health both include children's mental health cover; typical wait to a private child psychiatrist is 1–3 weeks.

How much does PMI with mental health cover cost?

Adding mental health typically costs £4–£15/month on top of comprehensive cover for an adult. A comprehensive policy with full mental health for a 40-year-old is £65–£95/month. Family of four is £200–£340/month.

What isn't covered under PMI mental health?

Chronic conditions requiring long-term maintenance (bipolar, schizophrenia) are typically covered only for acute episodes. Learning disabilities, dementia and personality disorders are commonly excluded. Substance-misuse rehabilitation is excluded on most policies (Vitality is an exception at premium tier).

Private Mental Health Cover UK

Most UK PMI policies now include mental health cover as standard or as an inexpensive add-on. Typical benefit: 20–45 outpatient sessions of CBT/counselling per year and 28–90 days of inpatient/day-patient psychiatric care. Mental health provision has become one of the fastest-growing PMI benefits since 2020. NHS talking therapies (NHS Talking Therapies, formerly IAPT) has an average 6–12 week wait to first assessment and a further 8–20 weeks to treatment. CAMHS for under-18s can wait 18 months or more in parts of England. Private CBT is usually available within 5–10 working days.
PMI mental health cover typically has three components. Outpatient therapy — CBT, EMDR, counselling, psychology — capped at a number of sessions per year (20 on standard tiers, 45+ on premium). Consultant psychiatry — assessment, medication management, diagnosis of ADHD/autism where covered. Inpatient/day-patient care — admission to units such as The Priory, Nightingale, Cygnet for severe conditions.
Not every policy is equal. Freedom Health caps psychiatric admission at 28 days per year. Aviva Solutions requires the Mental Health option (worth adding for ~£4–£8/month). Bupa By You Mental Health includes unlimited inpatient days when clinically necessary — the single most valuable feature for families concerned about eating disorders or bipolar.
